The Balanced Scorecard in an
African Purpose Driven Organisation
Bringing Excellence to Helping People
Implementing a Balanced Scorecard is a daunting task. It shows a clear commitment to excellence
on the part of any organisation that undertakes this journey, and to do it properly.
Zoë Life approached me about the possibility of helping them do this; and being an ardent supporter
of the Balanced Scorecard, I jumped at the opportunity.
Research quickly convinced me that I would be somewhat on my own. I could not find another
example of a Balanced Scorecard having been implemented in a Non-Profit type organisation in
South Africa - or the rest of Africa, for that matter. It might have been done, but I could not find any
such reference.
So armed with some material from the United States, we jumped off the burning platform of not
having a well integrated strategically focused Performance Management System in place.
The first part of the project took about two months - which took us to the point of having a Company
Scorecard and a departmental Scorecards for each member of the management team.
Following this, was the production of a book, which can serve as a manual for performing a similar
project, called: The Balanced Scorecard in an African Purpose Driven Organisation.
The book consists of three sections:
Section 1 is a step by step training guide with a prepared PowerPoint presentation to train a
management team in preparation for implementing a Balanced Scorecard.
Section 2 uses the Zoë Life Balanced Scorecard as an example to show what the elements of a
Scorecard looks like, and what kind of information should be recorded with regards to a scorecard.
Section 3 are a few sample templates of certain items that would provide the input data for the Zoë
Life Balanced Scorecard.
I wrote the book under contract to Zoë Life, so I cannot sell it. However, if you are interested in a copy,
please email me at ashton@ashtonfourie.com and I will arrange to get a copy into your hands.
If you are interested in implementing a Balanced Scorecard in your Purpose Driven Organisation,
and you would need some help, drop me a mail, and we can look at the possibility of making
something happen for you.
What is a Purpose Driven Organisation?
If you are wondering what a "Purpose Driven Organisation" is. Zoë Life is not a traditional Non
Governmental, or Non-Profit organisation. They are actually a registered company, that does both
profitable and non-profitable activities. The Profitable activities are used to support the non-profitable
activities.
But all activities, profitable or non-profitable, revolve around the organisation's vision to breathe
abundant life into people, situations and places. That is its purpose, and it tries to drive this purpose
through all its activities, regardless of whether those activities are aimed at making profit, or whether
they are funded by external funders.
